Competitor FAQ's

Question: Who should compete?

Answer: Anybody who wants to!

If you have somebody you regularly dance with socially, but neither of you have competed before, Social Starter is the division for you.  There are no costume rules and no dance rules – just go dance for fun!

If you are a line dancer, you have two options.  You can ask your local line dance teacher to get out there with you.  These are divisions called ProAm Line dance where you dance to line dances you and your instructor choose.  Dance to whatever is popular in your area!  And you, your friends and your instructor can all compete together. For more information on ProAm Line Dance, see this great Article by Donna Caudill. In Line Dance you can also dance to the UCWDC® dances at the Newcomer, Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced levels.  In Newcomer there are three published dances they are posted at the UCWDC®  Website – www.ucwdc.org.

If you have a regular instructor, you can enter ProAm with your instructor.  There are Pre-Newcomer divisions for people who are truly new dancers.  If you’ve been dancing a while but haven’t competed before, you may want to start in Newcomer.  You and your instructor would make that decision together.

Question: I have never competed before, what do I need to know before I register?

Answer: You need to know a bit about the divisions and dances.

We’ve started with a bit about Starter, Line Dance and ProAm above.

Beyond that, there are four dance types:

  • Couples

  • ProAm

  • Line Dance

  • Troupes & Teams

Couples, ProAm and Line Dance include various levels.
These are:

  • IV Newcomer – the first division you would enter if you are a new dancer  – then above that are:

  • III Novice

  • II Intermediate

  • I Advanced.

Within the levels there are age divisions.  These include Juniors (18 and under), and the juniors are split into Primary (0-9), Youth (10-13), and Teen (14-17).  Adult divisions are 18 years and older.  Open includes all adults, Crystal includes those who are 30 and over, Diamond is 40 and over, Silver is 50 and over, and Gold is 60 and over, and Platinum is 70 and over.  If you are dancing in Line Dance or ProAm, these divisions are further divided into genders, so the females compete together as do the males.

In Couples, (except for Juniors, who may enter any dance) you must dance Two Step, and you may dance any or all of the other dances offered.  The dances are Two Step, Waltz, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, NightClub, Cha Cha, Triple Two and Polka.  To qualify for an overall award, each couple must compete in 5 dances.  Everyone must dance in Two Step and Waltz, one of the two swings (East or West Coast), and two alternate dances (NightClub, Cha Cha, Triple Two and Polka).  If you dance both swings, your best will count toward overall, and if you dance more than two of the four alternate dances, your best two will count towards overall.

Question: What is the UCWDC®

Answer: UCWDC® is an acronym for the United Country Dance Council.  This is an organization that was organized in the 1980’s (incorporated in 1987) and it’s main function at that time was to standardize the rules for Country Western Dance.  There were Country Dance Competitions going on already, but they all used different rules.  Thus a competitor would need to contact each event to find out the rules for that event.  The UCWDC® now holds the Country Western World Championships as well as sanctions events worldwide.

Question: Do I have to be a member of UDWDC to compete?

Answer: To enter Starter, Pre-Newcomer or Newcomer divisions you do not need to be an Associate Member of the UCWDC unless you intend to compete in the World Championships.  You must be an Associate Member of the UCWDC

Question: Where do I find out the rules?

Answer:  The rules are posted on the UCWDC® (United Country Western Dance Festival) website: www.ucwdc.org .  If you have specific questions, please feel free to email me – I am the event director of the Oklahoma Dance Rush, but I am also the Vice President of Rules for the UCWDC®.

Question: What do I wear to compete?

Answer: That depends on the division where you want to compete. In Starter divisions there are no costume rules.  In Pre-Newcomer ProAm and all Newcomer divisions there are a few rules.  You are not required to wear a costume, but you do need a country look.  Also you may not have sequins, rhinestones, or any sparkly embellishments on your outfit.  Just wear what you have to start with and go have fun!  See the part of the UCWDC®  Rules pertaining to costumes
